How one team, one eagle, and one unforgettable week brought Greystone Golf Club to the national stage.
When the dust settled on the windswept cliffs of Cabot Cape Breton, the Greystone Golf Club contingent stood tall, second place in a field of the country’s best, and a week filled with moments they’ll never forget. But the story didn’t start on Cape Breton Island. It began at home.
We caught up with Matt Robinson, Head Golf Professional at Greystone, who joined the winning local team for their run through Regionals and Nationals as part of the RBC PGA Scramble presented by BMW.
“Making it there already felt like a win.”
Over the years, Robinson has seen several Greystone teams come agonizingly close at the Regional level, one even missing by a mere 0.3 strokes last season. So qualifying for the 2025 National Finals was more than a breakthrough; it was validation.
“With a few close finishes at the regionals over the years… it was very satisfying for the team to qualify this year,” Robinson said. “We talked about this on the long bus ride from Halifax airport to Cabot, just making it felt like a win. Maybe that attitude took some pressure off.”
From the moment they arrived, the experience felt elevated. First-class hospitality. Tour-level treatment. A championship venue carved into ocean cliffs. For Robinson and the team, it didn’t take long to realize they were part of something special.
An eagle, a spark, and a second-place finish
“After eagling the first hole in round one, it set the tone. I think it gave us a calm confidence from the start.”
Over three days of competition, something rare happened: they never changed the playing order. “In events like this, you’re often mixing things up to find momentum. But everyone understood their role and embraced it. Our dynamic formed so quickly and so naturally.”
The result? A second-place finish against the nation’s best teams, and a victory in the event’s putting contest to cap off the week.
“It felt like an accomplishment just making it to Cabot,” Robinson said. “Finishing second… it was the icing on top of an already fantastic experience.”
A local qualifier with national implications
Greystone has hosted a local qualifier for seven straight seasons, but this year had a different energy.
“I’ve always looked at the RBC PGA Scramble as a chance for ClubLink Members to have a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Robinson said. “There’s always the hope that the winning team makes it to Nationals.”
This year, the winning group, Derek Long, Zane Neily, Chase Langeraap, and Jake Kisac, earned their way to Regionals at Bayview, where Robinson joined them as the host pro. Their strong play there made the dream real.
Robinson doesn’t hesitate when asked what advice he’d offer to golfers thinking about entering the 2025 RBC PGA Scramble. “Do it! It’s a great opportunity for amateur golfers to feel like a Tour player. You get to experience a world-class facility, great prizing, and for us, memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.”
A season to remember
The RBC PGA Scramble continues to grow, welcoming more than 13,000 golfers from over 180 facilities across Canada. Greystone’s path, from hosting a local qualifier to climbing the leaderboard at Cabot, captures exactly what the event is designed to deliver: competition, camaraderie, and the kind of golf memories that stick with you.
Congratulations to Matt, Derek, Zane, Chase, and Jake for an incredible run and for representing Greystone with pride on the national stage.
